Fianl Project- Birds and Garden Decor

For my final project I started drawing several birds overlaying each other until the 18"X24" sheet of paper was filled. Once drawn, I colored the birds using prismacolor markers. I left the white's of the eyes so that it would be easier to find each bird. I decided to work with Sculpey modeling clay and use the birds for inspiration. I made gardening stakes since I recently moved to a new home and want to decorate the plants on my front patio.

After I braided 40ft of sky blue fabric I went home and hung some of my smaller pieces on it to see if I could use any of them for the flag and to get a feel for what it would look like hanging. I decided to use only the city pieces as the first and last fabric panels. Then I irritated my daughter for some advice and begun writing the 13 word panels. After I knew what I wanted to say, I began to paint and sew the panels. I stuck some lace into a cold cup of coffee over night and kept on working the next day. I had 11 visual drawings/paintings that I had to think about and how they would pertain to the words. I was really interested in being able to tell a specific story without having to directly spell it out. I was trying to incorporate two parallel stories but also give an overall feel or unifying presentation. I wanted it to be sensual and pensive and earthy and fragile. It is a story, firstly, of my desires to be free, to connect with nature and the cycles that brings me back to the city and of the belief that there is no separation between the pavement or my thighs. That human nature IS nature and yet there is a sense of suffering if I'm unable to focus my attention on that side of nature; the greens and blues and skin and tangled hair and wind burned and dirt below the nails. I really like to climb trees and be in the mud. I like being cold and hot and wet and winded. I think of this often when I am among the skyscrapers.....it is my yearning to be held.

I was not certain about the final piece but the project was very powerful for me. I thought about things I hadn't for awhile and watched as it translated onto the material plane.

Then, after I had sketched as my mind recalled, I applied thin washes. It felt like it was raining indoors.
After stretching canvas around treated and sanded two-by-twos I then rabbit skin glued the back to make it tight. This works well for any painting that is acrylic or oil that is in need of tightening (on the back of the work). It has a horrible smell so use outdoors if possible. I left the front raw because I like to use it this way. So I sat and prepared a working space. Then I mixed some very thin acrylic washes and began to sketch my memory. It was like I was there in the kitchen and the mood was present while I was drawing. It was very nice to revisit the kitchen and house I lived in but have not seen for over 15 years.

Dasha's Final Project

So, my sister, who is 13, is living in California while I am here in Portland.

She is a very creative individual and I wanted to create an assignment that would not only stimulate her creativity, but mine, too. She is a great writer so I proposed to her an idea. I asked her to write a children's story so that I could create and illustrate a children's book.

This soon became "What If I Were Something Else?", a children's book by Barbara Hayes, illustrated by me!

After gesso-ing sheets of raw canvas, cutting them up, folding them, punching holes and weaving the binding with yarn, I painted each individual page. I didn't change any parts of the original story.

Final Assignment-WINDOW TABLE

When I was told we could create anything for the final assignment I was confused??? Anything?!? Quickly what followed however was excitement, I would keep the theme of making a useful product, I have really enjoyed collaborating with my amazing mom (who doesn't realize she herself is an artist) on my assignments using her woodworking skills and ideas. In the beginning I wanted to make a coffee table out of an old door, however I went to the rebuild center and found no doors that I liked but I did find a WINDOW so the project turned to a more useful design for my house a side table out of a window a WINDOW TABLE. I had never previously been to any rebuilding centers which were amazing and I want to continue to visit them and come up with funky reusable designs from different materials. This side table actually will help me solve a problem as well, one that will cure an anxiety of mine about spilling things drinks primarily on the coffee table which my computer sits on and so currently we place all liquids on the floor however this creates even more spills due to the fact the drink is now closer to a foot in which it can be kicked and so often does, on a very expensive rug. So this side table will give me a place to put my morning coffee while I do my early morning Internet browsing and solve many current spilling anxieties of mine. All of which stem from my mother, the spilling anxieties I mean. Side note-I used to spill alot of milk on my moms antique dinner table and then had to clean it and oil the wood, this is a very difficult task as a little kid. I now have sequences in my head where I can see things spilling before they even happen-not a psycho promise just a little anxious- the end

It took a long time for me to think of myself as an artist. Being raised by professional Jazz musicians and visial artists, I've grown up in a constantly creative environment. I've always made art in my spare time, but it was only a year ago (right around the beginning of last summer when, after three years of college, I realized that I probably should have been an art major all along) that I really started to think of myself that way. Over the past year, I've developed my ideas about what an artist is and what I want to be with my art. I've expanded my skillset in many ways. I've mainly gravitated towards painting and metal-work. In my painting, I have always felt very connected to Natural inspirations, in particular botanical subjects and the symbolism of trees. But though I love to paint, I derive the most joy from working with metals, and hope to design my art major around the goal of gaining training in this area of art. I have learned how to solder, cast, fabricate, and use the power of heat to create some really cool effects in the metal, and I could spend hours in the studio playing with design ideas. My hope is to develop my skills in both jewelry and small scale metal-smithing, and larger sculptural work. I'm still waiting to see where my art takes me, but whether I put these skills to use as a working artist or simply use them for the purposes of my own enjoyment, I know I have something that will always make me happy.

hey guys,
when we got assignment 5 my first thought about what i would do if i could do anything i wanted was to apply to this fellowship at this summer long artist's school. basically if you get the spot, you get to live there for the entire summer, have a studio, access to all visiting artists, and a small paying job, instead of just paying many many dollars to take a two week class.
so i actually did it! which is a pretty big deal. the application consisted of images of your work and a letter of intent, letter of recommendation and your resume. everyone who has applied for the spot before has mailed in those things to the office, but i created a blog instead. i have no idea if they'll ever look at my blog, and i've never had any hope that i'll actually get the fellowship from the beginning. but the process of sitting down and making a portfolio was really great for me, and i wanted to share it with you guys and get any feedback that you have at all (typos, questions, suggestions, critiques, etc). i'm going to leave it as it is for a little while, giving the oxbow people time to look at it, and after that i have a really great start to having my own artist's website that i can use as a tool until the internet becomes obsolete or 2012 or whatever.

I've been weaving, or more accurately, sewing pine needle baskets for many years. Growing up in the Blue Mountains of Eastern Oregon, I was surrounded by the long pine needles shed yearly by the Ponderosa Pine trees. There were so many of them! I can't remember where I first saw a pine needle basket, but I was fascinated and amazed that something beautiful could be made from all those darned pine needles. I took a class at the local community college and learned to make the traditional pine needle basket.

Over the years I've challenged myself to go beyond the traditional methods and designs. I found that any shape can be achieved using pliable wet pine needles, wire, raffia, and a little imagination. I've made roses to use as handles on lids; I've made a fruit basket filled with pears and apples; my latest is a tide-pool with a star fish.

This basket goes further away from the design and construction of a traditional pine needle basket. The star fish at the base is a 3 dimensional piece that has a wire skeleton to provide strength and form the star fish. Using raffia I filled in between the wire with a basket weave. The remainder of the base of the basket was done with the traditional coil basket construction. For the sides of the basket I wanted to create the energy of the waves crashing over the tide pool. I wanted to create a sense of rolling motion, turbulence, and the weathering effect waves would have on rocks. To do this I needed to move away from the uniformity of coil construction. For the sides of the basket, I made odd circular/oval shapes and sewed them directly to the basket. I would then continue working a basket coil over that shape anchoring each piece as I went. Rather then building the basket one coil at a time, I would introduce new coils wherever I needed them. The result is an asymmetrical basket which represents the chaos of turbulence, tides, and weathering. At the base is the star fish which is centered in a uniform back ground which could represent the stillness of a deep pool.

Making this basket by far has been the most challenging!

For my final project, I have designed and curated a blog dedicated to the most diverse flower on planet Earth, the orchid. There are 25,000 species of orchid, and a lot of them, if not all, evoke a sexual energy when viewed up close. I have always thought orchids were beautiful, exotic and most of all, slightly out of reach. Their care is something for the obsessive, being high-maintenance mostly-tropical finicky flowers. I wanted to look more closely at the different varietals of this family of plants, and in my research started collecting so many beautiful photographs. Orchid breeders and keepers are not only obsessive with the care, but also the documentation of their plants. Thus a treasure-trove of fascinating, somewhat vaginal photos of flowers was revealed to me online.

I made this blog as an orchid lover for orchid lovers. It is pornography in the sense that I love these purely aesthetic, functionless flowers, but further it is porn due to the graphic macro documentation orchid lovers take of their seducers. By focussing on the image of the flower, this blog is a porn rag for the hardcore orchidaceae nerd, and hopefully a gateway drug to new-found orchid lovers. I have learned so much about the many, many species and have tried to tag each photo taxonomically, to better remember the names. So many beautiful names!

Robert Mapplethorpe was in many ways my avenue to approaching this as an art piece. His photographs of orchids (often pictured with nude men) revealed the sensual nature of these plants to me. I cannot recommend Mapplethorpe enough to those interested in photography.

I also visited the NW Orchid Exhibition and Sale this weekend and bought my first orchid, a Pahopedilum Maudiae 'Oriental Enchantment x Supersuk' ladyslipper orchid ready to bloom. I see a long future ahead of ever-growing obsessiveness with orchids. I wanted to put this info up online now so that you could look at the blog before class this week. I hope you enjoy it, I have enjoyed making it, and if you love orchids please follow the blog, it will be updated A LOT.

Story behind this piece is that I wanted to show my appreciation for my parents. I am adopted and have always felt great gratitude that they were there to take care of me when my birth mother couldn't. For a long time I would want to buy them gifts or in some other form show my appreciation through things I payed for, but I feel that something like this is much more meaningful.

In the future I hope to make a similar piece but to incorporate the faces of both my birth and adoptive parents.

Here are the images from assignment 4. I made two new cactuses. One of which is in the peice. The other was not ready in time. I used fabric stiffener on burlap (one of the suggestions from someone in class) and put that into the cactuses. I also used the fabric stiffener to make a hill shape and I paper mached over it. I just need to get a picture of it painted for the final image. I like it now. I like the concept of lots and lots of wire cactuses and might do some drawings and etchings of that next quarter.

Assignment 4 was to make something that was based off of a memory. This was a timely project. For years I’ve expressed the idea that when people we love die they continue living whenever we think of them or whenever we base a decision upon the influence they still have on us. I always had planned on making a gallery of “memory boxes”. A Memory Box would be a shadow box that contains a picture and memorabilia.

One of the people that will always live in my heart is my old granddad, Fred Monkhouse. Fred taught me many things as I grew up and was one of the few people who recognized my talents. While Fred was still alive, he would often come by the house and bring me all sorts of presents. Most of these presents were things that were his mother’s, or funny little odd things from around his house. There was the star fish and sand dollars that he picked up off the beach when he went to the ocean as a child. I have an old silver spoon with the name Jennie. There is this old pocket Bible, from mom and dad, date 1899. He brought me old books, stamps, and coins. The prize possessions is his mother’s blown china Easter egg when she was a little girl.

Fred was a unique person who barely entered the 20th century. He cooked off of a wood stove. The food he ate was from his garden, or what he fished and hunted. There were a couple of things he would buy, bread, butter, coffee, and packaged cookies. Everything in his house, barn, cellar, and garage were “manual”. He had no power tools or appliances (except the refrig). Shortly after Bob and I were married we took pictures of everything in Fred’s house, barn, garage, cellar, and garden. He thought we were nuts. Looking at those photos today, I’m glad we took the photos. After Fred’s death the place was sold. The house is still there but everything else is gone.

For this project I decided to use some of the memorabilia to make a Memory Box. I used one of the black and white photos I took of Fred and used an old picture frame. The garden seeds are from an antique store but they are typical of the vegetables that Fred grew. One of the presents he gave me was his old slate from the one-room school house. I included the Bible, silver spoon, the starfish and sand dollars.

To assemble the box I avoided the use of glues or other chemicals that could corrode and of the pieces. I hand sewed everything to the back board. To adhere the photos to the slate I did end up using a non-acidic glue on black construction paper. The paper was hot-glued to the slate (stone). I decided that glue wouldn’t hurt stone. I included some other small items for color and design, and were very symbolic of the life and beliefs of my old friend.

Memory Project

So if you missed the small sentiment in class, when I was growing up I used to sit on a small stool close to the ground and eat dinner every night. I have been on a search for my own stool ever since I have moved out of my moms house, so I decided this would be a great time to just make one! Plus I have really enjoyed keeping the theme of usable projects for this class. I decided to paint the top of the stool mono-chromatic orange because orange is my favorite color and I just really enjoy the whole mono look and I am also obsessed with parallel lines. I have always found parallels in life by squinting my eyes and lining things up it's just always been this weird little thing that I do...the end.

p.s.- I am spraying this with Polycrylic clear gloss protective finish before class but I won't be back on my computer to post those pictures I will have it in class however as long as it's dry.

Scrapbooking Memory Project

When David and I met almost one year ago he was the first guy to really take me out on dates. We've gone to arcades, dinners, water parks, played miniature golf, pool, we go to concerts, rose festivals, and movies. I've gathered souvieners along the way to remember all the things we've done together. I really appreciate having someone that enjoys going out and having similar interests as I do. I've wanted to put something together for awhile and a scrapbook seemed like a perfect project for this assignment.
Being a visual learner I like to remember things by seeing them. Pictures are the best way for me to remember the way things have been, and how things change over time. I've held on to pictures, tickets, postcards, guitar picks and greeting cards from things my David and I have done together. Our one year anniversary is coming up on March 28th, 2010. I decided to start a scrapbook of our relationship and the memories we’ve shared over the past year.

Stitchings of the Past- Dasha Shleyeva - Assignment 4

This is a two piece reflection and homage to one of my childhood role models in the rural Moscow or "Podmoskovye", in the town of Domodedovo. The woman with whom I spent a lot of my childhood, Anna Petrovna, or as I called her Baba Anya, was an amazing grandmother, aunt, and mother figure to me at different times in my life when my own mother wasn't, and since my grandmother, Ludmila, or Baba Luda, passed away when my mother was four years old, I never had a grandmother in my life. She was my great aunt by technical relation, but she ws so much more in many ways. She was a widow and a very strong, amazing woman. In fact, she is probably outside, as I type this, in her garden, building a new fence or pulling weeds or doing something a 76 year old woman should not be doing. She has taught me fortitude, perseverence and extreme strength and patience in hard times and I will forever love her no matter how stubborn she can be at times.

This first part was supposed to be a reflection of things that she has taught me:
Cooking and Gardening. I wanted to make an apron out of the skirt she gave me last time I visited her in Russia but the skirt got lost in the move recently and I was unable to locate it. This apron is still an homage to her and a reminder for me to not forget my tradition and to continue to cook our traditional recipes for our friends and family here, passed down in our family over the many years. In Russia it has always been a big, cultural aspect to not leave the table hungry. In fact, it's extreme overcompensation that still hangs in the air, brought out in my relatives' constant nagging questions of, "Are you hungry still? Do you want more soup? More Fish? No more soup? Then have more salad! No more salad? Then more potatoes!" And it goes on and on. It's literally such an "insatiable" concept at the table that it makes you laugh. As for the gardening thing, I want to continue gardening the vegetables I remember helping plant as a child back in Domodedovo in our new yard in Southeast Portland. Potatoes, carrots, cucumbers, dill, squash, strawberries, raspberries, dill, onions, and on and on. (Maybe even chickens some day! )

The Full Frontal

The second part was to finish a song that was inspired by Baba Anya about old age and a reflection on the ebb and flow of life. At the time that I started writing it, last spring, the flowers had just started to bloom, like they are now on the cherry blossoms and it made me think of the bloom and fade of life itself and how it can still be beautiful even though it is sad in many ways. I thought about how Baba Anya once asked me to sew a dress for her out of a certain fabric, so that it would be the dress she would be buried in. I thought it was the most absurd, sad, terrible thing to say to an eight year old. When I look at it now, I realize she was just showing that she wasn't afraid of death, it was a fact of life, and she was making light of a heavy subject. I deeply respect the ability to come that far in accepting our inevitable fate.

So my friend Ashley King and I collaborated together to create a Violin and Guitar piece which we will perform live. (I will also post an edited and finalized mp3 later)

I must say, the process of this assignment really was amazing and I loved all the background that went into it. I would definitely do it again.

since my project is strictly audio/visual based, i decided to post a previous piece of mine and explain the process and ideas behind whatever it is you want to call what i do.

i started out with the music, which was composed using a beat machine, a synthesizer, and my laptop. as i was producing the composition, specific visual themes were coming to mind. This happens quite frequently while i produce, which i call my inspiration or motivation for the piece. there is usually some sort of world in my head that i am trying to soundtrack. this time, i figured it'd be fun to actually create that world and set my music to it and deliver them both simultaneously.

Musically, this particular composition made me feel like i was in some kind of swanky late 70's/early 80's night club on a mean drug binge, dancing without a care in the world. i added some ominous synth washes that gave the track a spacey/sci-fi feel.

now, i like my retro/vintage paraphernalia to be legitimate. i knew that if i set out with a borrowed camera to record some footage, i wouldn't get the same grainy effect that i was looking for. so, i used this new site i heard about at the time called vixy.net, which lets you rip video/audio off of youtube and save it as a file on your computer. so, i set out into the vast ocean of vlogs and time-wasting clips galore to mine the world of youtube for footage.

using my internet searching superpowers, i typed in keywords to get the footage i was looking for. i found some Studio 54 footage of people dancing like the 70's, some clip from an obscure 80's sci-fi fashion film, and some swirling nebula haze to play up those synth pads. i chopped up the pieces of video i thought would be most useful and loaded them into Final Cut Pro along with my song.

edit here, transition there, drag, drop, a lot of rendering time later and voila! i have this weird re-edited video to further pollute the internet with stuff to watch while you should be doing something more important!!

sooo, this process will be similarly repeated for my "response to a memory" project, which i have chosen to reflect my memories of New Jersey, which will doubly act as a formal goodbye piece to that particular chapter of my life. i'm excited to show you all on tuesday. i better get back to work.

The tricycle story

I told most of this story in class, but here is the longer version. And for those who were not in class that day, or not paying attention to me (I really can't blame you), now you will know why I am making a tricycle for my memory project.

When I was young - pre-school young, probably about 4 or so - my older brother broke my tricycle. He didn't do it on purpose.

We lived in a house with a lovely, long sloping ramp that curved from the front porch, across the lawn, down a slope, to the sidewalk. I recognise it now as a wheelchair ramp, but then it was a really fun place to ride a tricycle. We would start at the front porch and ride really fast down to the sidewalk that ran in front of the house. Fun without leaving the yard. I wasn't allowed to leave the yard. There was also a short flight of steps that ran from the porch to the sidewalk. We would ride down the ramp, then drag the trike up the steps - it was a shorter trip - then do it all again. All afternoon. I remember playing this game for hours.

The tricycle was mine, not my brother's. This is important. We didn't have much and what we had was shared, but the trike was MINE. Having somethinga as big as a tricycle (think like a 4-year-old) was huge. It was a special thing.

So my brother broke my trike. He is about two years older thatn I am, so the gap isn't that major. If I was four at the time, he was six. He broke my tricycle.

This is what happened: We were doing our usual ride down the ramp, drag the trike up the steps, ride down the ramp thing. Then my brother decided to ride the tricycle down the stairs instead. On my tricycle. It broke. He wasn't hurt, but the trike was. He was upset. I was upset. Mom was upset. I was really upset. I cried. He didn't cry. I rememebr being more upset thatn I had ever been before. For days and days I was upset. It really affected me.

I was not upset because I had lost my favorite toy. What upset me the most is that I never got to ride down the steps myself.

Barry Sanders' Lecture last night was lovely!

I left with a heavy heart and a mind filled with many thoughts, artists, psychiatrist, philosopher and writer references to explore and look up.
I was enthralled by his passion and enthusiasm for the here and now, yet a careful remembrance and respect for the past history-changing events.

It was a bit on the heavy side in regards to feeling like I had relived an emotional roller coaster of the 1950's-1970's "Mad Years" in the United States with him by the end of the lecture. He talked of Lenny Bruce as a "subversive comic" that helped uproot tons of hush-hush issues during the Mc Cartheism, Red Scare, "Madness Gas", LSD "tests", "arasol hallucinogens" (to make the 'enemy' reveal secret plans and thoughts). He touched on how this kind of fearlessnes in questioning the government is not as apparent anymore since our government runs best when its' people are in fear. He talked about how there's 'an enormous power given to words when they are repressed' and how Larry Bruce looked that everlong fear straight in its' face on stage during his comic routines. He also stressed that we, too, in this censored media day and age, can still find tons of true, raw, real news and ongoing updates!

Dasha's Tiny Inventions

So, I had all these ideas, and I had created a coaster beer cozy thing that had velcro on the bottom so my cat(s) wouldn't spill beer on the carpet but ! I realized our new house has hardwood floors! Bah. So, no need for that. Then, I decided to create a little case for the top of the neck of a guitar, so as in transport, the litle tuner knobs wouldn't move, but then that was a failure because it would have taken just as long to put that little case on as it would have been to just put your guitar in the actual guitar case! Boo. So then, I decided to do a series of tiny problem solutions.

Here we go....

1. We have 3 people living in the house with 3 cats that constantly eat each other's food. We have a rule that who ever leaves the house first feeds the fatties, but sometimes it's hard to tell because the food will already be gone. So I made a little velcro-attached sign so everyone knows if the fatties have been fed alrady ( or not) .

2. My earrings and jewelry were in a mess after we moved to our new house and I wanted a way to organize them. So I decided to make something that would also be aesthetically pleasing to the eye . So I made an earring tree with wire, yarn, and superglue.

3. The third little problem is that now that we have a new address, when I send stuff out, I don't want to write it out, so I decided to carve out a stamp with my new address to save some time!

So, like I said in class, my problem is periodic spells of, not very serious but nevertheless worth mentioning to my mother,memory issues. My mother who is a strange and wonderful health nut/junkfoodaholic, told me I should purchase a balancing board for several reasons besides memory. It's good for depression, dexterity, reading, hand-eye coordination to name some. 1st: I got some hardwood and dremeled and sanded the sides and corners down. Then I experimented with letters and stains. Some stains spread in the wood and others stay just where you apply them.

After the lettering experiments, I got some advice from my daughter that was more about distractions and laughter. Then I filled in the letters with graphite and acrylic pencils. After this, I used the wood shop on campus and have to say it was way fun to use all the tools and feel the possibilities (I never went to orientation, oops). Check it out if you can. The top of the board was penned and stained with water color inks. Then I polyacryliced over the entire piece.
I'll begin my evening balancing for a few minutes and keep you posted of improvements (if I remember).

My problem is that during the process of carving into a lino or wood block it is easy to slip with the knife. This can result in getting cut or stabbed by the tool being used. You need to be careful when carving the blocks. Solution is to make a modified bench hook. something that will not only help hold my wood or lino block in place, but also has a lamp to help the lino block carve easier and I want the bench hook to be more portable.

I was originally going to go with hinges for the bottom lip of the bench hook. I didn't really care for that Idea. I threw a couple other ideas in my head and decided upon drilling holes into the main body, and using nails to go into the holes. then I used rings around the edge to keep it all together.

Well the idea has merit for all of us who cannot manage to drive without doing other things, but in practice it has a few bugs.

First - the tray does work, if you are driving straight. I don't have any pictures of that because I cannot drive and film at the same time. Yeah, I do other dangerous driving things, but not filming.
Second - The tray does not work if you are turning corners often.

Holly told me that the tray should be heavier and then it would stay upright better. She is right. I did not figure out a way to do that without the weight getting in the way.

All told, it was an interesting experiment, but not the key to fame and fortune from patents. Here are a couple short vids of my experimentation.

I originally wanted to solve my constant problem of never knowing where vending machines are on campus by creating an online map, but I ran into trouble making images that would be legible and easy to navigate online. Thus I addressed a bigger and perhaps more fulfilling (healthier, at least!) problem in my life: I can't afford anything that is not necessary to my life.

I have wanted a terrarium since I was a child. A neighborhood friend had one when I was growing up, and the idea of a stable, self-contained ecosystem under glass has since fascinated me. The problem is, they are expensive to buy pre-made and buying individual miniature plants to place inside of a home-made one can add up. I've spent tons of time thinking about terrariums, and done lots of internet research, but making one seemed daunting.

Thus I gathered a bunch of succulents from my neighborhood, my own yard and my mom's yard. I bought a large glass kitchen storage container from Goodwill for $2, spent $6 on activated charcoal, and that is the full amount I paid to make the terrarium above, which contains 9 different kinds of plants.

Building the terrarium took a few hours. First you put a thin layer of activated charcoal on the bottom of the container. This removes impurities from the water in your terrarium, keeping it healthy. Then a layer of potting soil. Traditionally one should use sterilized potting soil but that was an added cost, so I just used potting soil from my garden shed. I built the soil up at an angle, so that all of the plants could be seen once it was done. I used a rock I had at my house to become the anchor for the moss and fern piece that I found in my backyard. I used a Q-tip to make holes for the plants, tweezers to place them, and a larger Q-tip to tamp down the soil around the plants. This is harder than you think when you start! Plants are fragile, and it is hard to see through the glass and be sure of what you are doing.

I am so happy to have this terrarium on my nightstand. I have a spray bottle to keep it moist, and I hope that it will last a long time. I am considering it my birthday present to myself!!

I also used a fancy jam jar to make a smaller terrarium for my friend. I want to make more!

Martha's Steel Reinforced Starfish

For Assignment No. 3 the problem I worked on was to make a reinforced base in which to build a coil basket around. I have been weaving pine needle baskets for many (many) years and have developed a technique for creating 3 dimensional shapes such a fruit/flowers/seashells. I use these woven shapes as a decoration or handle for the basket. I then weave a pine needle basket in the traditional method. That is, a coil basket made of pine needle coils (8-inch long pine needles bundled into a coil) laced together with raffia.

For several months I've been wanting to incorporate the shape of a starfish into my baskets. I had thought I could sew dried starfish (the kind you buy at tourist stores) onto the bottom of the basket. On one basket I created a 2-dimensional shape. Unfortunately everything I tried was too fragile. I needed to develop a starfish shape that was sound enough to bear weight (a load of fruit in a basket). I've been toying around with the idea of making a soldered wire frame covered with a raffia woven "skin". The frame would provide enough strength to build the remainder of the basket around.

I started working on this over a week ago and have spent about 2-3 hours per day working on it. I was successful.

This is the wire frame that I made. I use steel wire and soldered each piece.

This is where I'm using raffia to weave a covering over the wire frame.

Once I finished covering the frame I took a 4-inch brass ring and covered that in the rafia. I then attached the starfish to the brass ring and then wove in the gaps.

This is a very sturdy "base" in which to weave the coil basket around.

Living Lines Collection:

Intricate lines, vibrant colors and more often than not, a shiny white eyeball make up over 100 different designs in this collection so far. First the eye is drawn and then quickly lines are branched off until the image starts to resemble some kind of animal. After the figure is mapped out, the spaces are filled in with Prismacolor Design Markers. Finally I redo the outline with a Deco- pen whose dark glossy finish enables the colors to really pop. A few whimsical flower scenes and colorful abstracts are also included in the collection, which I have been working on since fall of 2007.

Acrylic Paintings:

I began these paintings in January of 2006 right after the New Year. Bored after the structured life of living at home and going to school, I really didn’t know what else to do with myself once on my own. Although my roots go back to the pencil, I don’t map out the image first. The freedom that the brush gives is an interesting balance to the control that the individual piece naturally takes on. I find myself stuck between these two opposites for hours until the image emerges from the canvas. Most of these works are very colorful, energetic and typically abstract with identifiable objects that tell a story.

Watercolor:

My favorite part of the process is drawing the whole picture out in great detail so that it is more like approaching a paint-by-number. It than takes many hours of layering colors light to dark. The many layers of paint and water are added in a gentle manner that requires a lot of patience and a final vision that is constantly being worked towards. The hardest part about this medium is letting go of the urge to control the piece and skip steps towards completion. When this happens, the piece looks rough, overworked and doesn’t carry the soft attributes that most watercolors are admired for.

Education:

I have always enjoyed art, but never thought it would be something I would take on as a career. However, after several general studies classes at Portland Community College and a term studying Interior Design at the Art Institute of Portland, I have found that nothing satisfies me as much as my life as an artist. I am continuing my education at Portland State University this fall of 2008, and am hoping to acquire my degree in painting and drawing.

Here is a cool example of functional art by an artist named Gabriel Wiese. Its made out of corks:

Also, I thought of these stairs that were in a new super up-scale shopping center that we just saw in Vegas over the break. Each step has hundreds of slabs of Brazillian agate imbedded into it, and is backlit so that the light shines through the design. I thought this was a pretty spectacular design idea, though I couldn't track down the name of the designer who constructed it. Here's a pic:
